2022 Swing Camp Alberta – Second Annual!

2022 Swing Camp Alberta – Location and date confirmed – 19-21 Aug

A fellow swing enthusiast has kindly offered her home acreage in central Alberta to host this event! To minimize conflicts with some other events we had to choose August 19-21, 2022. Swing and Django djam all weekend long. We will look at providing some workshops, band scramble, etc. depending on the attendance and interest.

Event description

Hey fans and players of swing music and Django Reinhardt! Join us for a weekend of camping and jamming August 19-21, 2022 in central Alberta. The focus is acoustic swing music including swing tunes from the great American songbook, Western swing and the music of Django Reinhardt and the Quintet of the Hot Club of France. Acoustic guitars, bass, violins, violas, clarinets, mandolins, singers, etc. are all welcome. All playing levels are welcome. There will be some experienced players there but newer players are encouraged to come and learn. If necessary we can split into separate jams for different specific styles and for different playing levels. Possible workshops if people are interested.

I’ll try to arrive early(ish) on Friday, Aug. 19 to help set up and greet people. Probably not much sooner than 12 noon or so. We can go until whenever people leave on Sunday.

Activities

This is mostly about jamming (all weekend long, all night if necessary), but if there is interest we can run some informal workshops. Possible topics: rhythm guitar, basic swing chords, basic hot club chords, la pompe, repertoire, upright swing bass, mandolin, violin, etc. Perhaps we can have a band scramble Saturday night with ad hoc bands putting together short performances. Please email me (the_cave@yahoo.com) if you have an interest in something specific.

Last year we were pretty busy jamming so there weren’t many pictures taken. This year we should grab some photos and share them. At some point we should get a group shot. We can share them on the Discord server.

Location/Facilities

It is a private location within a two-hour drive of both Edmonton and Calgary. I haven’t been there myself but from the photos and description it sounds like a great spot. We can send the location information to those that have signed up. There is some nice grassy space for tenting and trailers. Water and electricity are available. Water is good well water but you can bring your own if you prefer. Some nice parks are not far away.

Stuff to Bring

Tent or RV
Bring your own food, drinks, toiletries, clothing (for all seasons – it’s Alberta you know), supplies, etc.
Acoustic instruments, tuner
Charts (paper, electronic) – some extras to share if possible
Music stand, chairs, guitar stand
Pop-up gazebo
Propane fire ring

There is some firewood on site, but it would be good to bring some of your own as well. Some cutting and chopping may be necessary so bring an axe and pitch in.

Bring a bike, swimming suit, paddle board, etc. to use at a park nearby.

Directions

To be forwarded to registered participants.

Costs

Whatever the costs are for the location, facilities, firewood, etc. will be shared among attendees (not for profit). Since this is someone’s private land and house we are renting two portapotties for the participants convenient use. Any teachers and instructors should be compensated so we will also share that cost. I think that $30 per person should cover the portapotty rental. That’s pretty cheap for a weekend of camping and jamming! Instructional costs are yet to be decided, but it will be pretty reasonable.

To reserve a spot, please send and etransfer of $30 to
